For the first time, Malawi will hold a national pageant for men.

Dubbed Mr Malawi, the first contest is scheduled for December 22 at Capital Hotel.

The winner, according to organisers, will represent Malawi at the Mr World contest in China next year.

“The competition is important, especially for the development of our young men, so they are moulded into responsible citizens and leaders and contribute to the social economic development of Malawi.

“By participating in Mr World, we are also promoting Malawi as a viable tourist destination, on top of instilling a discipline in the young men as future fathers and also help fight in the alarming rate of alcohol and drug abuse among the young men, and establishing a campaign against gender-based violence and abuse,” explained one of the organisers Vitu Kamanga of Artistic Agency.

With preparations taking their course and the date fast approaching, Artistic Agency which is running the contest together with Theophilus Fashions as one of the sponsors, is still working on the prizes.

“We have estimated the winning prize at half a million kwacha, and we are working hard to ensure we reach that target. We have other consolation prizes in other categories. In terms of pure cash we have a few prospectives, but mostly it’s direct payment to service providers by some sponsors who would rather not be mentioned but we will mention main sponsor once agreement is done soon.

The 12 finalists, all of whom have shown great form. They are Hayilu Likonde 21, Terrence Edward Ngulube 19, Austin Chikagunda Banda 24, John J Msonthi 25, Dumisani Nazitedwe 26, Harrison Chindebvu 24, Chimwemwe Kazembe 22, Michael Kazembe 24, Hassan Kara 23, Harry Kazembe 24 and Treyvis Hara.
